Comprehensive Story Analysis

$2.50 per 250-word page

(That’s a penny a word.)

Story analysis is a detailed evaluation of your manuscript, including assessment of character, plot, conflict, dramatic impact, pacing,  turning points, marketability, and other relevant story elements. Depending on the condition of the manuscript, this may also include evaluation of paragraphing, writing technique, and sentence structure as these relate to or impact the story development. Note: this does not include editing for grammar, style, or usage, and it does not include such line editing techniques as revising sentences, clauses, or phrases.

Line Editing and Story Analysis

 $4.00 per 250-word page

More comprehensive than story analysis alone,  this also includes a sentence-level examination of writing technique with a special focus on clarity and impact.

Which is right for you, story analysis alone or story analysis with line editing?

Choose story analysis alone if:

  • You’re confident that most of your sentences are clean.
  • You understand commonly botched usage distinctions such as less/fewer, additional/another, your/you’re, and the like.
  • You’re a published author and have been professionally edited enough times to know a thing or two about self-editing.
  • You understand the difference between a dialogue tag and a dialogue beat, and you know when to use them.
  • You can spot a dangling modifier with relative ease.

Synopsis Evaluation

$7.00 per single-spaced page

Many writers find the synopsis the most difficult piece of the proposal to write. There are probably two reasons for this. First, writers may have a difficult time pulling back the lens far enough to get a broad view of the story. And second, writers don’t always understand how an agent or editor reads a synopsis.

Synopsis evaluation will assess the impact of characters, conflict, turning points, tone, and other elements evaluated by industry professionals.

Special! With purchase of a full manuscript edit, get a synopsis evaluation for only $5 per page.

Partial Package

* All manuscript pages must be double-spaced and formatted per industry standards. Manuscript pages are calculated by dividing the actual computer word count by 250. Synopsis pages and query letters should be single-spaced.

Would these prices also be used for editting of short stories?

    Dear Ms. Stevens,

I am very interested in the Partial Package. Several agents have asked to review my synopsis and pages of my manuscript.

It is thrilling, yet scares the hell out of me.

When do you expect to begin offering these services? Right away? If so, what amount of time should I expect to wait for a response?

    Thank you,
    Jaymi

What will I get? I need pretty detailed feedback, I think, not just a few paragraphs. Will you provide the sort of feedback and editing an editor would?

    • Hi, Dancer, and thanks for the question. The story analysis results in detailed feedback, far more than a few paragraphs. I just completed the notes for a full manuscript, and the notes totaled over 30 pages. Not all manuscripts will require that much feedback, and some will require much more. It’s very case specific, which is one of the benefits of private editing: it focuses on the needs of your specific story.
